      Our History

      Celebrating Over 200 Years!

The current church building has been 'on this corner' since 1896. Metropolitan has had three permanent  church buildings going back to 1833. And going back to our beginnings, the congregation of Metropolitan was formed in 1822. We have a long and proud history!

Metropolitan United Church - London, Ontario

Metropolitan is a vibrant downtown congregation serving the community throughout the London area!

As a congregation, we are active with in-person Sunday services (9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.) and streaming for those who prefer to watch from home (11:00 a.m. only). Our Fairmont Campus is heavily involved in outreach ministries in partnership with numerous organizations and offers worship services on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. Our diverse and engaging children and youth activities are offered throughout the year.

Our Pastoral Care team tends to the needs of our membership and our Outreach team provides tangible opportunities to be involved in the needs of our neighbourhood and world.

There are opportunities to participate through our incredible music program (various choirs and handbell groups; children's music, arts and theatre programs; organ and choir director mentorships, etc.), our fellowship groups (United Church Women UCW, the Men's Club, Sanctuary Guild, etc.) and our prayer or study groups. The Centre for Practical Theology offers numerous opportunities for pilgrimages, study, conferences and experiential learning.

As a community partner, we are excited about the exciting adventure we are undertaking with London Symphonia as their primary concert facility! The first phase of the renovations (the sanctuary renovation) is almost complete, and more are planned. The upgrades provide the orchestra and other community groups access to an incredible concert hall with full stage lighting, sound and projection capabilities.

Groups across the city regularly use our facilities, including Western University Faculty of Music - orchestra, bands and choirs; Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts - one of only two elementary schools for the arts in Canada, located here in London; The London Citadel Band - one of the most prominent and most accomplished Salvation Army bands in the country.

Our facilities are also available to rent for events, meetings, speaking engagements, etc. Once our renovation is complete, more information will be available on our website about the specifications for each of our facilities. Please do check back in the Fall!
