Tradition
Traditions that endure, both time-honoured and new!
Preaching at Metropolitan - Preaching has been a cornerstone of who we are. Ministers' names such as George Goth, Maurice Boyd, and Jeff Crittenden are not only known in the United Church, but also in the wider community. There is something to be said for only having 10 ministers since our current building opened in 1896! We have strong ministry, with inspiring and thought-provoking preaching!
Music at Metropolitan - Music is an important part of our traditions at Metropolitan and is considered to be at the core of our worship. Metropolitan has been on the forefront of musical innovations. Programs introduced as a new ideas have endured, and become traditions in our church.
- We have maintained a choral tradition throughout our history - 35-voice, eight-part adult choir (SSAATTBB).
- We were one of the first to introduce handbells in London - 5-Octave (61-bell) choir with both handbells and handchimes.
- We innovated with a contemporary service, featuring current music.
- We have a full choir school for our choristers, one of very few in Canada!
- We train organists; currently there are 5 organ scholars.
